Text Box: HOW YOU CAN HELP SOUTHERN GROUND HORNBILLS ?

It is vital to know how far the decline of this important flagship species of the Savannah biome in South Africa has gone, so that efforts can be made to preserve the groups that are left and augment groups in trouble.

THE MAP HAS PINK QUARTER DEGREE SQUARES (QDS) ON THEM WHICH MEANS POPULATIONS WERE RECORDED IN THESE SQUARES PRE 2000. THE NEED IS NOW FOR GROUND-TRUTHING THESE PINK QDS TO ESTABLISH IF THERE ARE STILL SOUTHERN GROUND HORNBILLS, OR IF THEY ARE EXTINCT FROM THESE AREAS.

Ground Hornbills are difficult to find, but if you see them, have them on your property or know people that have them on their properties you can help update the distribution map. There is an ID kit available for you to attempt to ID and sex groups. Anecdotal information may be all you can get. Remember Ground Hornbills have a territory of 100 kilometres squared and are fiercely territorial, so if you find a group it will be the only group in this size of area.

If Ground Hornbills are no longer in these pink QDS it will prove a reduction in their habitat and numbers. This survey will be final conclusive evidence that will be used to Red List Southern Ground Hornbills as a species in dangerous decline and in need of assistance.
