SOUTHERN GROUND HORNBILL GROUND TRUTHING How to Read Grid Squares A map with the distribution of Southern Ground Hornbills is supplied as well as a list of all the grid squares that need to be ground truthed. In the figure below a grid reference has been shaded. In order to read the grid the following steps are taken: Each grid reference is designated by a four digit number made up of the values of the latitude and longitude at the North West Corner of the degree square. One square represents 1 degree of latitude and longitude. This map is therefore read as 28 (Latitude) and 30 (Longitude). The Latitude is always read first and is the horizontal lines on the map. Longitudinal lines are the vertical lines on the map. Each Degree Square is also divided into 4 Quarter Degree Square (QDS) blocks which are represented by the letters A, B, C and D. The shaded square occurs in block C. Each QDS is further divided into 4 squares. These are again numbered A, B, C and D. The shaded block is square number B. Therefore the grid reference for the shaded square is 2830CB.
